University of Reading
Professor Richard Ellis is Dean of the Faculty of Life Sciences having previously been Head of the Department of Agriculture and Head of the School of Agriculture, Policy and Development. He read Agriculture at UCNW Wales and completed his PhD on plant genetic resources conservation (now known as biodiversity conservation) by long-term seed storage at Reading. After an initial period as a Research Fellow in Biology at Stirling, he joined the staff at Reading in 1977 as Research Fellow and progressed to Senior Research Fellow to Lecturer (under the national ‘New Blood’ scheme) to Reader to Professor of Crop Production. He has 326 research outputs, two thirds of which are international refereed journal papers. His research covers reproductive plant biology and the effect of environment on seeds, plants and crops. His seed research has been widely applied in over a thousand gene banks worldwide, both for crops and wild species. Research on flowering has been concerned with global crop adaptation across tropical to temperate regions. The related climate change impacts research began in the 1980s. It highlighted the vulnerability of crop production to extreme climate events during seed set and seed and grain development.
Lunch and networking
Developments within Agriculture and Strategic Leadership
Dr Chris Garforth
His current research interests are in two main areas: communication, and the reform of public sector extension services. A key focus in the former is on the uptake and use of the outputs of natural resources research, and in particular on information and knowledge constraints which make it difficult for people to develop their production systems in support of their livelihoods. He is conducting research in the UK, for the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, on farmers’ response to new knowledge and technologies. In partnership with overseas researchers, he is involved in research on these issues for five of DFID’s research programmes – the Livestock Production, Crop Protection, Natural Resources Systems, Fisheries Management Science, and Animal Health Research Programmes. Recent consultancy assignments in Uganda and Nepal, for DFID and The World Bank, have contributed to the debate on what role the public sector should continue to play in advisory and other support services for farmers. Before joining the university in 1980, he taught at the University of Nigeria, and worked as a Research Officer for Newcastle upon Tyne City Council and as an Action Research Officer in the Agricultural Information Services of the Botswana Ministry of Agriculture. He studied Land Economy at Cambridge for both his first degree and his PhD on land tenure and agricultural land use in Nigeria.
